The US Senate on Monday declared conservative jurist Amy Connie Barrett the new Supreme Court justice, delivering a historic and controversial victory for President Donald Trump just eight days before the election.
The largely divided chamber voted 52 to 48, with party lines in a largely Republican-controlled Senate that saw Barrett reach the high court as the third Trump candidate and a six-to-three conservative majority. Achieved it.
Republican lawmakers played applause with a thunderous roar, and the White House is also expected to celebrate the ratification in the final byelection on November 3, with more than 60 million Americans already voting.
