AT&T Inc. plans to cut more than 3,400 technician and clerical jobs nationwide in the next few weeks, Wireless Carrier told its chief labor union, the Communications Staff of America, on Tuesday.
The union said American telecom and media giants are also planning to permanently close more than 250 stores, which will affect 1,300 retail jobs.
AT&T said in a statement that there are novel coronavirus epidemics and consumer behavior of lockdown to prevent the spread of infection.
AT&T said, “With more customers shopping online, we are closing some retail stores to reflect our customers’ shopping practices.” “While these plans are not new, they have been accelerated by the COVID-19 epidemic.”
AT&T said that most employees would be offered an elective position within the company.
AT&T said executive, manager and union-represented employees with non-payroll workers outside the United States would be affected. The company is offering severance pay and health care for laid-off employees for the rest of the year.
In April the company pulled its financial forecast for the year https://reut.rs/3d8coYf due to the COVID-19 crisis and warned that the current quarter would reflect the full impact of mandates residing across the country.
